L-glutamine is the most abundant amino acid and is found in large quantities in muscles. In fact, approximately 60% of the total amount of muscle amino acids is glutamine. It is classified as a non-essential amino acid (i.e. it can be produced by the body) but, because it fuels the muscles, in certain situations the demand for glutamine increases and the body is unable to produce a sufficient amount. For example, during intense exercise, glutamine stores are depleted because the body is under stress and the muscles and tendons need more of this amino acid. In this case, to reduce muscle breakdown, it is necessary to obtain glutamine from the diet.
Natural sources of glutamine are beef, fish, cottage cheese, asparagus and broccoli.
