Psyllium husk, or Ispaghula, is grown mainly in the Middle East and is a source of natural fibre.
Fibres are classified into two categories, water-soluble and water-insoluble. Insoluble fibres remain unchanged as they pass through the digestive system, while soluble fibres are modified, forming a gel-like substance. Once digested, soluble Psyllium fibre absorbs water and swells to form a gel which increases faecal bulk, making it a good regulator of intestinal transit.
A sufficient amount of fibre should be provided in the diet, for example from whole grains, fruit and vegetables.
