For rectal use (primarily for infants and young children), apply a small amount of water-based lubricant to the tip. Gently insert the tip into the rectum no more than 1/2 inch. 6. Wait until the thermometer signals completion (usually with a beep). 7. Remove the thermometer and read the temperature displayed on the screen. 8. Clean the thermometer thoroughly with alcohol or an antiseptic wipe after each use. 9. Turn off the thermometer.
