Tiger balm is one of the most popular pain reliefs worldwide. However, most of us are unaware of its origin and its multiple uses. You’ll be surprised about the treasure hidden in these little jars!
What is tiger balm?
It’s a traditional chinese ointment, based on natural ingredients, that works as a natural analgesic for all types of pain relief. Its origin dates back to the last imperial dynasty of China, where the emperors soothed their pains using the magical cream.
Its worldwide breakthrough begun when Aw Chu Kim, a herbalist that worked in the courts, left China and established a small dispensary called Eng Aun Tong in Yangon at the end of the 1870s, where he began to make and sell this soothing ointment.
When Aw Chu Kin died in 1908, his business was handed down to his two children Aw boon Haw (which means “Peaceful tiger”) and Aw Boon Par (“Soft leopard”). Together they expanded the business, opening in Singapore and successfully selling their ointment in neighbouring countries such as Malaysia and Thailand. Aw Boon Haw was the marketing genius that called the product Tiger Balm.
