How much do you know about endometriosis? Symptoms, causes and treatment

Did you know that 1 in 10 women suffer from endometriosis? This gynecological condition directly affects a woman's uterus, causing extreme pain that makes it difficult to carry out her daily activities normally.

Endometriosis is the result of tissue similar to the endometrium growing in various parts of the body, creating adhesions and implants that become attached to adjacent organs and make expulsion through menstruation difficult.

SYMPTOMS:

One of the most relevant symptoms of endometriosis is excessive bleeding accompanied by severe pelvic pain. However, there are other important symptoms to be aware of:

    - Abdominal pain

    - Abdominal distention

    - Nausea and vomiting

    - Constipation or diarrhoea

    - Blood loss between cycles

    - Pain during intercourse

    - Pain with defecation or urination

    - Chronic lower back or pelvic pain

    - Infertility

CAUSES:

Actually, there is no known real cause of endometriosis. Some of the risk factors are as follows:

    - Having your first menstrual period at an early age, before the age of 11.

    - Having very long menstrual periods, lasting more than 7 days.

    - Short cycle length, less than 28 days.

    - Family history.

    - High oestrogen levels.

TREATMENT:

Endometriosis cannot be cured, but there are treatments to slow its progression and alleviate symptoms.

Hormonal treatment: such as contraceptives, which prevent a woman from menstruating continuously, slowing the progression of endometriosis.

Surgery: perform a laparoscopy to burn the lesions caused by endometriosis with electricity and then wash out the cavity.

Drainage: in some cases it is necessary to open the ovary and drain the accumulated old blood.
